Child Parent Psychotherapy

Therapy for young children from birth through age five and their parents/caregivers. We can also work prenatally.

  • Helps families heal and grow after stressful experiences
  • Supports family strengths and relationships
  • Respects family and cultural values

Child Parent Psychotherapy supports and strengthens the parent-child relationship and provides a space for young children and parents/carers to work through stressful experiences and understand the child’s emotions and behaviours.

CPP is a culturally aware intervention, understanding cultural strengths as a source of protection and wisdom, whilst recognising ongoing and historical oppression and trauma.

  • Loss of a loved one
  • Separation
  • Serious medical procedures
  • Abuse or violence at home or in the community
  • Children show difficult behavior
  • Children have a change in placement or caregivers
  • Family members have physical health or mental health difficulties
  • Caregivers would like help with parenting and improving parent-child relationships

This can include historical events that parents or carers have experienced, that are impacting in the present.

Narrative work

Our narrative books are developmentally appropriate and co-produced with caregivers. They are books that explain difficult experiences to very young children, such as why they have come into care, why they might not see a parent, and traumatic events they have witnessed or experienced. We co-develop this narrative with you. It gives you and other key people a shared language that supports your child to understand and talk about their experience.

We complete an assessment to inform the narrative book and make sure this is the right support for you and your child. We develop a shared understanding and approach with you, making this a therapeutically informed experience.
